Italian Regions and local Authorities in the Palestinian territories

Definitions and Decentralized Cooperation Offices in Jerusalem

Decentralized cooperation means a series of activities that are part of the development cooperation sector, but are managed by local territorial authorities (regions, provinces, municipalities and their aggregations).

Among the forms of assistance:

a) International Cooperation activities: that include both regional initiative programs and support projects in the territory programs. (NGO’s, associations and local authorities)
b) humanitarian and emergency aid
c) development of education, awareness, training and information initiatives in regards to themes of peace realized in the territory.

Some of the interventions of cooperation are agreed on by the Ministry and the Regions. Generally, the decentralized cooperation intervenes with institutional actions such as capacity building, training, awareness, good government, territorial systems and promoting local development.

The Cooperation Office in Jerusalem hosts two Italian regional offices. One is from Emilia-Romagna and the other from Tuscany. The Cooperation Office maintains constant relations with all the authorities that have specific projects in the Palestinian territories.

Italian local administrations support human society through a dense network of relationships (also referred to as (“people to people cooperation”). They maintain solid partnership relations with municipalities and other Palestinian administrations and strengthen not only institutional but also cultural and human ties.

Thanks to local collaboration, the decentralized cooperation’s specific way of operating with the human society, minor authorities and the local communities is preserved and valued.
